Communications campaign design: RTÉ Radio

Rain created a campaign and literature to communicate the closure of the MW Radio 1 service and to explain to users the alternative services available.


The challenge…


We were called upon by RTÉ to communicate a temporary closure of their MW service.

As befits a public service broadcaster, and with many older listeners using the service; a clear, friendly explanation of alternative services was needed.

The solution…


  • We worked with the client and partners to create a clear structure and content to the communications, with a view to simplicity and accessibility.
  • We developed the ‘Stay Tuned’ theme to communicate the key messages.
  • We created instructional illustrations, demonstrating to listeners how to retune their radios if necessary.
  • We devised icon designs to convey the channels across which RTÉ Radio 1 delivers its services.
  • We commissioned illustration (by Alan Walsh) to 'humanise' the campaign.
  • We created an insert and advertising for the RTÉ guide and banner advertising for the RTÉ website.

Client view:

The project was a success, there was good public awareness and virtually no adverse reaction to the closure. Rain was pivotal to this outcome. Their work was consistently innovative, yet focused on the task. Their committment and attention to the project were excellent. Particularly impressive was their rapid understanding and response to a difficult brief. In addition, they were personable and effective team members.
